Hostel Reviews: Cape Town

More fodder for the Googlebot...

Here is a brief summary on the two hostels we stayed at in Cape Town.

Ashanti Lodge

In short, nowhere near as cool as the place thinks it is.

Good:

The staff are nice, the property is beautiful, and the location great (and safe).

There is a seperate guest house a block away for the doubles w/ bathroom (their most expensive room) that are probably great.

Bad:

Their bar upstairs is a joke. I don't know anyone, even someone 19-20, who would think that psy-trance turned up so loud you have to yell at the bartender when there are are a total of eight people in the bar is the start of a good time.

Avoid the doubles w/ shared bathrooms. These will put you out along the pool and next to the kitchen. The hotel staff will clean the kitchen by throwing pots and pans around (with the door open, of course) at 7:00am so you are up in time.

Inn Long Street

Good: Location is great during the day. The staff are nice.

Bad: Location is terrible at night. The guidebooks will tell you this place is loud, which is an understatement. There are three different clubs feeding noise in to this place. The club closest has a metal roof and apparently no soundproofing and a massive soundsystem. And it runs until 4:00am starting on Thursday. Unless you are a really good sleeper, stone drunk or otherwise medicated, I'd not recommend this place.

With reviews like that, why stay anywhere else ? Sorry to hear lodging in Cape Town has been less than ideal. In related "wow I am older now" news, I mentioned "shrinky dinks" at a recent office function, and was met with laughter by some of the older veterans and blank stares by some of the folks recently out of school.
